Other Ranks Shoulder Title 4th (Hallamshire) Battalion worn from 1908 until the 1920’s

The ‘T’ represents the Territorial Force and the 4 represents the 4th Battalion York and Lancaster. The Hallamshires were based in Sheffield. Made in gilding metal and this example has hexagonal loops.

This example shows signs of having been painted black at some stage. Painting metal insignia black was a common practice in wartime as soldiers tried to reduce the shine from badges that might otherwise glare in the sun therefore giving the soldier’s position away.
