The 37th Yorkshire West Riding Rifle Volunteer Corps was formed in Barnsley in 1860. Originally, the Corps was independent and of just one company strength. It became part of the 3rd Administrative Bn in 1862 but transferred to the 4th Administrative Bn in 1863 which in turn eventually became the 2nd Volunteer Bn York and Lancaster Regiment with 2 companies based in Barnsley.
Badges to units such as the Rifle Volunteer Corps are rare but a Glengarry badge is known. This example is a die stamped, coiled bugle surmounted with a crown in blackened white metal with the number 37 highlighted within the bugle.
