This unusual 65th of Foot badge is similar to a collar badge with the addition of a 65 in Roman numerals below the ground on which the Tiger stands. It is made in one piece, of fire gilt, is on lugs and is of high quality.
Its purpose is unknown and its unusual in that the use of Roman numerals was not a common occurrence throughout the history of the York and Lancaster regiment. No records can be found to indicate its past use but it has been suggested that it could have been a bandsman's badge as its similar to the type of badge used by other regiments (the Leicestershire regiment has a similar badge used by its bandsmen). However, it is difficult to prove this either way as no records can be found to confirm this suggestion.
